History

The American Eskimo Dog, or Eskie, comes from different types of Spitz dogs that were created in Germany, including the Keeshond, Pomeranian, and Volpino Italiano. When Europeans moved to the United States, they brought these dogs along to work on farms. At one point, they were called the American Spitz and even performed in circuses, sometimes being adopted by audience members as pets. After World War I, their name was changed to American Eskimo Dog to distance them from any German links.
Ideal Owner

The perfect person to own an American Eskimo Dog should understand how to handle a lively, intelligent, and occasionally headstrong pet. These dogs require plenty of social interaction, care, and physical activity. If they are left alone for extended periods, they might become destructive.
