History

The Beaglier can show various combinations of traits from its parent breeds in how it looks, acts, and behaves. This mixed breed was intentionally created in Australia during the 1990s, as people sought a small, lively, and healthy dog that lacked the strong hunting instincts typical of the Beagle. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was chosen for this mix because of its calm nature and good behavior. Although the Beaglier has only been around for a few decades, the two breeds it comes from have a much longer history. The Beagle, the smallest among British hounds, was bred many years ago to hunt small game like hares and rabbits. They were designed to be “foothounds,” allowing hunters to pursue their prey on foot instead of on horseback, which is why they are smaller in size. The Beagle was favored by the upper class and was once called the Royal Beagle. Their joyful and friendly nature attracted many fans beyond just hunters, and by the late 1800s, they easily transitioned from hunting to dog shows, becoming one of the most beloved hound breeds and a cherished pet. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, a more recent breed, is the newest addition to the English Toy Spaniels. It was first developed in the 1920s to recreate the beloved dogs of King Charles. The name “Cavalier” was added to set them apart from the older King Charles Spaniel.
