These little dynamo dogs are friendly and love to socialize, winning over hearts with their cute behaviors and lively expressions. Chugs are known for their endless love, creating strong connections with their humans and often sticking close by, eager for snuggles or playtime. With a fun mix of Chihuahua attitude and Pug playfulness, having a Chug around means life is always exciting—filled with affection, giggles, and a sprinkle of trouble.

History

The Chug is a fairly new dog breed that emerged in the United States during the early 2000s, but its exact beginnings are unclear. A Chug can be made up of different mixes of Pugs and Chihuahuas. Chihuahuas might trace their roots back to the Aztec era or even The Middle Ages. However, it is clear that they gained fame in 19th-century Mexico and were later brought to America by travelers. The Pug is a well-known breed from China, believed to have origins that go back to the Han Dynasty around 206 B.C. This breed made its way to Europe in the 1500s when trade between China and Europe began. Interestingly, Queen Victoria owned 36 Pugs!

Ideal Owner

When it comes to Chugs, beauty is subjective since their appearances can differ. A Chug is a great pet for someone who works remotely and likes to take quick play breaks. The perfect Chug owner will appreciate teaching them tricks and taking these affectionate pups on adventures.

Exercise Needs

A short walk of about thirty minutes or even less is enough exercise for these small dogs, particularly when they have engaging toys and their owner's company. Keep in mind that Chugs are low to the ground, which means they don’t run as fast as other dogs. Taking a gentle, leisurely stroll is perfect for them.

Space Requirements

This little breed is ideal for life in an apartment or a small house.

Training

Observe how the Chug's self-assurance increases with plenty of encouragement. They are clever, which helps them excel in tricks and activities. It’s important to start training and socializing Chug puppies as soon as you can to help them become confident and well-behaved pets.

Grooming

Have a vacuum close by since Chugs tend to shed a lot.

Suitability for Family Life

These small dogs are prone to being stepped on, so they are more suitable for individuals or couples who spend a lot of time at home rather than for busy or expanding families.

Did You know?

Chugs have shorter noses, which makes them more likely to suffer from heat stroke. It's important to have plenty of water available to keep them well-hydrated, especially in hot weather. This breed is also referred to as the Pugwawa or the Pughuahua.
