This breed is one of the two smaller types of Swiss dogs, originally bred to help move dairy cows from high pastures. The breed faced a serious risk of extinction during World War I, and after the war, there were no known Entlebucher Mountain Dogs left. In 1926, 17 of these dogs were found. They made their way to the United States in the late 1900s.
